Phantasmagoria By Deepika Arwind Directed by Jo Tyabji
In the hours before a live TV debate a young activist and a spokesperson for the ruling party meet in an isolated house in a forest – political, ideological and religious adversaries brought together by a journalist mutual friend. They sit and wait – fearful of what might happen. Meanwhile, eerie happenings – creatures & shadows in the dark – haunt this waiting time. As crowds gather demanding to attend the debate, mounting paranoia and horror collide in an explosive unravelling of political convictions and personal histories. Phantasmagoria pits the terror of speaking out against the fear of staying quiet in order to speak to us all about the dangers of growing populism and unbridled social media.
This is a great opportunity to observe and learn about directing new theatre writing through:
- Assisting the Director and cast through the rehearsals and the production week in Coventry.
- Assisting the Director with seeing the production into the Newcastle and London venues.
- Observing and reporting on performances during the run at all three venues.
There will also be opportunities for:
- Devising and delivering workshops for young people on the themes of the play in conjunction with the Artistic Director
- Sessions with the Artistic Director on leadership of a new writing company
- Sessions with the General Manager on planning and managing a studio production
