Kali is looking for two exceptional short scripts that explore the theme of Climate Crisis.
We’re looking for bold, original, thought-provoking writing to be developed into a 20 minute play and presented at a Climate Theatre Festival we are producing with other global majority theatre companies in March 2025.
Selected writers will be offered:
£600 fee to cover:
Travel costs if required.
Submission of two new drafts (across Autumn 2024), following two script meetings with a Kali dramaturg.
Submission of a rehearsal draft – February 2025.
Attendance at a one day London rehearsal with director and actors – March 2025
Attendance at the Climate Festival on Saturday 29 March, London where each play will receive a staged, script in hand reading as part of a showcase of new work on this theme.
Eligibility
This is open to:
UK based women and nb writers of South Asian descent* who are eligible to live and work in the UK.
All writers whether you are a seasoned professional or an early stage playwright.
Must be 18+
*At least one parent must be descended from the diasporas of the Indian subcontinent
To apply, you need to email us:
1. A script of not more than approximately 10 pages.
• It must be for a cast of no more than 4 actors, drawn from a pool of 6 actors – 3 women and 3 men. (There can be more than 4 characters if it is possible for one actor to play more than one part)
• For writers new to playwriting – please see advice on laying out a script in our Getting Started page in the Kali Resources section on our website
• Include the play title and your name on the first page
• Include a list of the characters and a brief description of each one on the second page
• It must be in Word doc or PDF format
• Ensure that the play’s title is in the file name
• The play must be entirely your own work and not have been previously produced in a full professional production
2. In the email with the play please tell us:
• Your full name and address
• What inspired you to choose the subject/situation in your play.
• What previous experience, if any, you have of writing for theatre
• Confirm that you are eligible to live and work in the UK and how you meet the eligibility criteria
